Annie Testar and Ruby Brook at English Schools Championships

This is the largest annual athletic event in the world and the 4th largest of all athletic event behind the Olympic Games, World championships, and the Commonwealth games. Each of the 45 English Counties sent teams of boys and girls in 3 year age groups, 8/9, 10/1112/13. Counties are split into large, medium, and small. Gloucestershire is a small county and can only take a maximum of 25 athletic across the gender age groups, which covers the 97 events. There is a minimum standard in each to be achieved before before being considered.

This year our group has two athletes racing in the 800m: Annie Testar in the year 10/11 age group and Ruby Brook in the year 8/9 age group.

Ruby is only 12 and if she was a week younger would be in year 7 so she has done amazingly well to be selected, the experience will be invaluable for future years. Ruby will have the support of an experienced familiar face in Annie Testar as she did in 2015 as a year 8 from Holly Bankes. Ruby will be one of the slowest girls the 800m, so her target this year is to enjoy the event and to finish as high up in her heat as she can, next year we can target a place in the final.

Annie has reached the final on her 3 previous English Schools and finished 6th on each occasion, so we can have some confidence that she will reach the final for a 4th consecutive time. This year her coach, Chris Brown, believes that Annie will significantly improve on 6th place!

Ruby's heat is at 4.14pm and Annie's heat is at 4.34pm on Friday. Annie's final is on Saturday at 10.52am. The whole event is streamed live on the link below.
