British Track and Field Championships – 4/5th Sept – Manchester

Tom Mortimer
  • Last week brought disappointment as 18 year old Annie Testar withdrew from the British Championships 800m as she was unable to get in shape to compete at this level, Tom Mortimer’s courageous but disappointing run in Kent just falling short of the qualifying time but smashing the clubs record for 3000m.
  • However Tom yesterday was delighted to receive an invite to compete in the 5000m which will be live on BBC 1 at 2.30pm on the Afternoon of Saturday 5th. He will face a very strong field including Marc Scott who last month smashed Mo Farah 5k British record by 10s. Tom will go into the 5000m as the 16th and lowest ranked runner. Coach Chris Brown stated that “Medals maybe are beyond Tom on the 5th, but I think he will surprise more than a few of the athletes”
  • Tom will race later today in the 1500m at Lee Valley London, which is perfect preparation for next week. Stroud’s Ben Coldray will pace maker Tom race and go through 800m in a rapid 1min 57s. Ben retired in 2016 so will not be in top shape but I am sure he will give Tom as much support as he can.
  • Ben was part of the U20 men team who won the national cross county relay by a country mile in 2011. In 2014 he won the British University 1500m title, and in 2015 he won the 1500m silver at the British Championships. Ben also holds the men’s 800m, 1mile, & Steeplechase club records.
