Saturday night saw Stroud’s Tom Mortimer opened his race season after the disappointment of having to pull out of the GB trials for the European indoor champs due to injury, with a dominate and controlled run facing a GB international who ran in the European indoor champs, Phillip Sesemann. Tom sat in the pack until the last mile and then went to the front quickly making it a two horse race. Tom led going into the last 200m holding off the sprint finish from Seseman to take the victory, the prize money, and breaking the 36 year old South West Counties record by 3s. Only 3 GB men have run faster in the last 25 years. Tom times also equalled ex 5000m world record holder Dave Moorcroft personnel best on the road, with a time of 13min 39s.
