On Friday 21 July Tom Mortimer travelled to London to compete in what turned out to be very highly class event. The conditions were wet, cold and windy so not ideal for fast times, but the results told another story!
Tom already had the 5000m qualifying time for the British Olympic trial in June, but to limit numbers the time was reduced significantly for the rearranged Sept championships. However, with no 5000m races British Athletics allowed qualification to anyone who could run 8min or faster for the 3000m.
Tom started steadily at the back, moved up on to the shoulder of the pace maker at 800m and when the pace maker dropped out at 1500m, Tom was on his own with a 20m lead. Tom smashed his PB by 14s, and broke Tom Russell’s 2013 club record by 8s, to finish in 8min 04s, beating two runners who will be running at the British Champs.
